• Upgrade to Exchange 2000, and then upgrade to Exchange Server 2003. This option is best for

organizations with a strong need to move away from Exchange 5.5.

• Upgrade directly to Exchange Server 2003. This option is recommended for other organizations.

Unless there is an immediate need to upgrade to Exchange 2000, it is probably best to wait for

Exchange Server 2003. The tools and documentation have improved, and this version provides

critical new features, such as spam defenses. Moreover, the extra risk associated with upgrading

to a new release can be reduced by carefully introducing Exchange Server 2003. Exchange

Server 2003 can be installed using a pilot program for testing purposes. The new server can be

placed into production in minimal capacity to see how it responds to a production environment.

Users can be slowly upgraded to the server as confidence in the server builds.
