Windows NT 4.0 Server Upgrade Guide 13
Additional disk space is recommended for domain controllers to support the Active Directory
database and log files. Use the following guidelines to determine how much disk space to allocate
for an Active Directory installation:
On the drive that will contain the Active Directory database template, NTDS.dit, provide available
space equal to 10 percent of the existing database size, or at least 250 MB.
On the drive containing the Active Directory ESENT transaction log files, provide at least 50 MB of
available space.
For optimum performance, store the Active Directory database, Active Directory log files, and
Windows Server 2003 operating system on separate physical hard disks.
If you plann to install additional services on the domain controllers, allocate sufficient processor,
memory, and disk resources. For more information about domain controller capacity planning, see
the "Planning for Domain Controller Capacity" section of the Windows Server 2003 Deployment
Guide available from on the TechNet Web site at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/WindowsNetServer/Evaluate/CPP/Reskit/ADSec/.
Use a hardware assessment table to document hardware and software information for each
domain controller. For a sample worksheet to assist you in documenting hardware information,
see the "Hardware Assessment" document in the Windows Server 2003 Deployment Kit
.
Assessing and Documenting Server Upgrade Order
Your upgrade plan should identify and document the domain controllers in the existing Windows
NT 4.0 domain. Include in the documentation the role that each domain controller holds in the
domain, and the services that each domain controller provides. Be sure to identify servers that
provide Remote Access Service (RAS) and LAN Manager Replication (LMRepl), because
upgrading to Windows Server 2003 affects these services.
For a worksheet to use in documenting servers and services, see the "Domain Controllers and
Services Documentation" section in the Windows Server 2003 Deployment Kit
.
Analyze the servers to determine the order in which the various servers should be upgraded. This
analysis should take the following into consideration:
Number of servers to be upgraded or decommissioned.
Applications running on the various servers.
Services running on the various servers.
Number of Servers
Calculate how many servers will be involved in the upgrade. Determine an upgrade priority for
each server. For example, if the plan is to perform an in-place domain upgrade, the Windows NT
4.0 primary domain controller (PDC) is near the top of the list, because it must be upgraded
before the domain can be upgraded to Active Directory.
