Activation is not product registration. The only information required to activate a product is an

installation ID created by the software and, for Office XP and Visio 2002, the country in which the

software is being installed. No personally identifiable information is required to activate.

The software activation process works as follows:

1. A user is prompted to activate the product during setup or use.

Note The products have a grace period in which they can operate without being activated.

2. The user selects an activation method: Use the Internet or call Microsoft.

3. The Microsoft Activation Server processes the activation request and verifies that the software

is legitimate.

4. If the user began the activation process over the Internet, the Microsoft Activation Server

returns an activation confirmation silently to the client computer. If the request was handled

over the telephone, the user receives the activation confirmation ID verbally, and then uses the

ID to complete the activation.

5. The user software is activated.
