Another approach might be starting with member servers. Windows NT 4.0 member servers can

be upgraded to Windows Server 2003 prior to upgrading to Active Directory. This approach

enables administrators to experience success while taking advantage of the new features of

Windows Server 2003, such as the Volume Shadow Copy Service.

Make sure to document which of the servers will be decommissioned. Some Windows NT 4.0

servers may be running on old hardware. Determine which computers can be retired and plan for

their services and applications to be rolled into other servers or replaced by new equipment.

Applications on Servers

Determine the critical company applications and corresponding servers, and then assign priorities

to these servers. For example, if a parallel upgrade has been chosen, perhaps it would make

sense to first upgrade a server with a lightly used application into the new parallel Windows Server

2003 Active Directory domain. The knowledge gained from this first upgrade and each

corresponding upgrade helps to make the upgrade of other servers smoother. For more

Services on Servers

Prioritize the services running on the servers. A detailed analysis of Windows services should be

performed. First, make a list of all services and make notes regarding their impact on the user

community. Planning the order of services to upgrade is helpful in determining the overall server

upgrade order. The following services should be considered:

• Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)

• Windows Internet Name Service (WINS)

• Terminal Services

• File and Print

• Web
